What pleases God?

Matthew 12:16-21  And charged them that they should not make him known:  17  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,  18  Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. 19  He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 20  A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.   21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

Jesus is quoting the prophet Isaiah as God speaks to Isaiah of the Messiah that is to come. “Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased:”

Can you express what it is like for a Father or for a mother to look at their new born child?

What is this pleasure?

This “Servant” Jesus Christ the 2nd person of the triune God would establish a true religion of faith by which Jew and Gentile would come to the saving knowledge of God.

The judgment is the establishment of that religion of faith, and the judgement is upon the Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary for the redemption of mankind.

God the Father through the prophet Isaiah tells us:  my soul is well pleased

Matthew 3:17  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

He was pleased in HIS humanity and He was pleased in HIS deity.  It is called the “Hypostatic Union”  In this was the Father pleased, as this was the basis of the gospel.

God becoming man to provide a means for fallen man to be restored back to God.

1Timothy 1:11  According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God,….

Define this phrase; tell me everything that you can see in these 9 words.

God said through the prophet Isaiah that HIS SOUL WAS WELL PLEASED – He was speaking of HIS beloved Son that was to come.

Isaiah 53:10  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

The LORD determined that HIS sufferings…, the sufferings of HIS beloved Son were necessary.  They were absolutely necessary for God to redeem the crown of HIS creation.

Therefore, HIS sufferings (the sufferings of Christ) pleased God the Father.

Why did this please the Father?

The Father was pleased that the Son would subject himself to so great sorrows to save the very crown of HIS creation. He was pleased with the end in view, and with all that was necessary in order that the end might be secured.  What is the end?

The Son pleased the Father because Jesus voluntarily submitted himself.

The Son pleased the Father because Jesus came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it.  No one would enter heaven by dishonoring the law.  We all come IN CHRIST by the one who fulfilled the law.

Beloved the Lord Jesus Christ was prepared to do anything or to suffer anything to bring pleasure to the Father.  Why is this?

Look at the sacrifices of Christ:

The humility of God becoming a man.

The humility of HIS own people Rejecting Him…, choosing Barabas (a murderer) instead of Christ the Savior.

The humility of HIS followers fleeing him in the night as the soldiers took him away.

The humilty of being falsely accused.

The humility of being stripped and beaten,

The humility of carrying his cross through the streets of Jerusalem as a common thief.

The humility of bearing in HIS body our sins.

The humility of God the Father turning His Back on HIS Son in the hour of HIS greatest need.
“…My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”  (Matthew 27:46)

So will we choose to follow the example of our beloved Savior to do anything or to suffer anything to bring pleasure to the Father.

Mat 25:21  His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
